Rajasthan Pilgrim Places

Brahma Temple, Pushkar

The Brahma temple is an important pilgrim centre for the Hindus. It is nestled in the Pushkar valley which lies beyond Nagaparvat and the Anasagar lake. This place, full of natural beauty, holds a special place in the hearts of Indians for it is believed that Lord Brahma, together with all the gods and goddesses, performed a Yagya here. Legend also has it that the ancient lake Sarovar had appeared miraculously, when a lotus fell from the hands of Lord Brahma and dropped into the this valley. The image of Brahmaji in Pushkar is in a seated Palthi position. This temple built with marble is decorated with silver turtle on the floor of the temple. The Rangnath temple has been built in southern style and is simply magnificent. Its images are almost true of life.

This temple has an image of Lord Vishnu, life-size dwarpals (door men) and Garuda pillars showing the mythical bird styled in gold. Pushkar has around four hundred temples. There is a temple dedicated to Mahalaskmi, who is the goddess of wealth and the Godamba Temple.

Brahma Temple is the only temple that is dedicated to Lord Brahma in India. Located near the Lake at Pushkar in Rajasthan, Brahma Temple receives many pilgrims to its doorsteps every year. Built in the 14th century, Brahma Temple commemorates Lord Brahma, who is considered as the creator of this Universe according to the Hinduism. Lord Brahma is one amongst the trinity of Hindu Gods, the other being Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. For the Hindus, Brahma Temple is an important pilgrim place. Raised on a high platform, the temple lies in the Pushkar valley that is known for its scenic beauty.

Pushkar is regarded as a holy place by the Hindus, since all the Gods & Goddesses of Hindu pantheon observed a 'Yajna' here. Moreover, the Pushkar Lake near this temple is believed to have been appeared when a Lotus flower fell from the hands of Lord Brahma in this valley. According to the Hindu mythology, once Lord Brahma was cursed that he would be not worshipped frequently by the people. Due to the reason, this is the only known temple in the world, where Lord Brahma is worshipped.

In front of the Brahma temple, two small temple structures are situated. One is dedicated to Kubera, wealthiest God. Legends say that he donated huge funds to Lord Venkateswara at Tirumala, most popular Devata (God) to people in Southern India who returns the money collected from visitors. He is one of the eight Devatas called ashta dikpalakas (Hindu Gods) who take care of eight directions in ‘yantra’, temple, house, or of the universe with reference to the point where we are situated. Kubera looks after the North direction. Another small temple like structure is dedicated to Lord Indra. He is head of an ‘Universe exclusively reserved for Devatas called Indra loka (for Hindu Gods) and looks after East direction. Probably they serve as Dwara Palakas ( to control the invisible entrants into the temple of Brahma).

During the time of Pushkar Fair, this temple is thronged by people in large numbers. At this point of time, Rajasthan Tourism arranges tents for the convenience of pilgrims and tourists. Brahma Temple gets a major attraction as it is the only temple in the world where Lord Brahma is worshipped. Pilgrims come to pay their homage and get blessings from the Lord.

This is the only existing Temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. Built in the 14th century, it stands on a high plinth with marble steps leading up to it. A silver turtle is set on the floor facing the sanctum-sanctorum or garbha-griha. Around the turtle, the marble floor is inset with hundreds of silver coins. Coins engraved with donors 'names are also embedded in the walls. Peococks adorn the temple walls as they are supposed to be the vehicle of Lord Brhama's consort Saraswati. A small image of the milkmaid Gayatri, flanks the four-faced image of Lord Brhma and is called Chaumurti. The sanctuary has silver doors inside a carved marble gateway. Steps in a corner lead down to a small cave with a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva.
